massive attack blog

A few weeks back Bristol played host to a huge open air festival headlined by Massive Attack. Staged on the Downs, only a short walk from the centre of Bristol the music event attracted over 27,000 fans.

Despite heavy rain on the day and a few problems the majority of the attendees left happy – if slightly damp.

It’s this time after the festival has finished when the real work (for the cleaning team at least) starts. The Downs, in the Clifton area of Bristol is a popular spot all year round for dog walkers, joggers and those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy some greenery.

With that being the case it was important that those in charge of cleaning up after the crowds did so as quickly as possible. We’ve blown the dust off the old calculator and done some number crunching to try and get an idea of the size of the job the cleaners took on.

Let’s say on average that each attendee had four drinks throughout the day and two meals. Multiplying that by the number of attendees gives us the following stats:

108,000 drinks cups
54,000 burger wrappers
81,000 plates
27,000 chip holders

That’s a staggering 270,000 pieces of litter in bins and scattered across the green in Bristol city centre.
